Situated on the NE Worden Hill Rd – ‘Route des Grands Crus’ of the Dundee Hills – Domaine Roy was founded by the Mike Etzel’s son Jared, back from California where he’d worked with the late, great Denis Malbec. He teamed up with Robert Roy’s (Beaux Freres) son Marc-André and took over an old hazelnut grove on the fabled Jory volcanic soils.
Together they have built a very snazzy winery, atop the newly-planted vineyard
Inside the cuverie however things are unexpectedly paired back – Jared is a winemaker who likes to do things simply, an approach he learned from his father. Fermentation is in concrete, extractions are light, fruit flavours favoured over the sheen of new French oak. Winemaking with a very light footprint. There’s huge potential here – very smart land and star-quality winemaker – to become one of the defining producers for the whole region.
