Mas Peyrolle

Mas Peyrolle is located at Vacquières, around thirty kilometres north of Montpellier, in the most northerly commune of the Languedoc, Pic St Loup. The landscape is wonderfully wild and dramatic, dominated by two distinctive peaks, the Montagne de l’Hortus and the Pic St Loup itself. The quiet isolation, coupled with the proximity to both the sea and the Cevennes mountain range, makes this a unique microclimate; noticeably cooler, above-average rainfall, the vines protected from the cool Mistral and Tramontagne winds. Consequently - unlike most Languedoc soils - Syrah absolutely thrives here. Northern Rhône lovers will admire the ripe peppery fruit of the Esprit, the sensuous texture that usually drives us all straight to Rôtie. Everything is in place, balanced and fine, both colours.

Jean-Baptiste Peyrolle is in his late twenties, and took over the domaine in 2009, his family previously selling all their fruit to the local cooperative. He studied at wine school and has travelled widely, returning with hunger and determination. In this short period, Jean-Baptiste has added new parcels of old vines and is officially converting to organic methods. He is a young man going places and, thankfully, the brilliance of the Mas Peyrolle fruit is no longer dissipated into those huge blending vats.
